Respite and/or Program Support Person (Part Time )

Supportive Housing for Young Mothers (SHYM)

SHYM is a not-for-profit organization that provides a safe, independent and supportive living environment for single, vulnerable young mothers (ages 16 to 21) and their children in a 12-unit apartment complex.

We are presently seeking candidates for our evening/overnight respite relief roster. Respite staff will have program experience (e.g. providing support in skill development or positive parenting) and will play a key role in fulfilling SHYM’s mandate. In addition, the respite worker will have basic maintenance and cleaning duties. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Minimum qualifications:
• Experience working in a supportive role
• Experience working with people from diverse cultural, social and economic backgrounds
• Good communication skills: able to negotiate and enforce policies, provide support and encouragement and accurately maintain written logs
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Certification in Non-violent Crisis Intervention, CPR, and First Aid, or willingness to obtain these at the start of employment
• Must be able to function in a busy environment, enjoy being around infants and young children and be able to model healthy living and decision-making

Assets:
• Training and experience in conflict resolution and/or negotiation
• Knowledge of infant and child development and/or parenting
• Experience with program delivery


Hours of Work: Weekday and Weekend evenings AND
Weekend (Friday and Saturday) overnight shifts

Compensation: Respite staff will be paid at a rate of $10.00 per hour with the exception of overnight (sleep) shifts, which are paid at minimum wage.
