Part Time Child Care Provider (ECE)
Supportive Housing for Young Mothers
Mount Hope Ave., Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
Hours: Evenings, weekends, and some weekdays
Wages: $11.00/hr
Background information: Supportive Housing for Young Mothers (SHYM) is a new program for young single women (primarily ages 16 to 21) with children, who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. SHYM opened in October 2007, and provides individual apartments for 12 young families. Each family may live at SHYM for up to two years. Through SHYM, young mothers will gain confidence in their independence from having learned valuable parenting and life skills, by participating in SHYM group programs, by living in a supportive environment consisting of both peers and SHYM staff, and by beginning to work toward their goals. Each mother and her child(ren) will have a healthy, safe, and supportive place to begin their journey as a family, thereby helping to reduce the many risks that both mother and children may face (including homelessness, isolation, poverty, instability, violence, exploitation, chronic stress, developmental delays, and physical and mental health problems).
The Childcare provider will play a key role in the SHYM program. The childcare provider will care for children while their mothers attend programs, and will also provide respite care as needed. The caregiver will work at times independently and may also supervise students and volunteers to provide quality care for children at SHYM.
Qualifications:
- Diploma in ECE or knowledge of best practices in ECE
- Experience caring for infants and young children
- Enthusiasm and affinity for work with young children and their young adult mothers
- Infant/child CPR
- Previous experience supervising others
- Flexible, adaptable, and able to work in an environment that is not always predictable
Job Description:
- Provide quality childcare for the young children living at SHYM.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the on-site child development room.
- Maintain the supply of high-quality books and toys.
- Act as a role model and resource for SHYM staff and tenants regarding early child development
- Assist with general duties, as required of all SHYM staff (receiving visitors to the building, answering the telephone, etc.).
Interested candidates should forward a resume and cover letter (as 1 document) to admin@shym.ca. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide updates on the status of your application and only those who are selected for an interview will be contacted.
